Laser printers are quicker than inkjet printers so they're better for

point of sale receipts and for long reports. The toner is generally more

economical than inkjet cartridges.

 

Make sure to look for printers with PCL 3, PCL 3 Enhanced, PCL 4, PCL 5 or PCL 6 emulation. Check the "Print Languages:" for

PCL 5&6

BUT AVOID PRINTERS WITH PCL GUI support:

If you have a current version of Jewelry Shop-Pro and Windows XP you can

also use PCL compatible printers using a USB port (though the parallel

connector remains much easier)

The 2300 and 2420 have two trays and an optional third.

Note that the 1018 and 1020 are missing PCL and so are NOT ok.

 

PCL Compatible Laser printers made by Brother:

HL-5240, HL-5240DN, HL-5240DN, HL-5250DNT, HL-5280DW

They have a fold-down multi-purpose input tray (e.g. for repair cards)

The HL-5240 5250 5280 lines can add two extra input trays as an optional extra.

 HL-5140

The compact and economical HL-2070N is compatible. It has USB, Parallel and

(interestingly at this $130 price) an ethernet connection. It's quite small

so might be usable for point of sale receipts even if you're short on

space at the register.  The $150 2170-W is also compatible and while it does not

have a parallel connector it does have wireless network options.

 

(Note that the Brother HL-2040 is NOT compatible  even though it has the

same case as the HL-2070N. the 2140 is NOT compatible nor 2170)

 

 

Dell Laser Printers with PCL: 1700, 1700n, M5200n, W5300n, MFP1600n,

3000cn, 3100cn, 5100cn. The cn's have Color capability. The 1700 has

a parallel port - the rest have USB.

 

Minolta PagePro 1250E and 1350E have parallel and USB port and offer PCL

(but the 1250W and 1350W do NOT)

 

HP color DeskJets (inkjets) 9800, 5550, 5650, 6122

 

Color Laser (not inkjet) printers with PCL:

Brother: HL-4040CN, HL-2700CN, HL-4070CDW

Brother HL2700CN. Has USB, Ethernet and parallel connectors (approx $500)

Konica-Minolta Magicolor 2450   Has USB, Ethernet and parallel connectors (approx $500)

RICOH - Ricoh Aficio CL3500N. Has USB and Ethernet connectors (approx $500)

HP Color LaserJet 2605dn with Ethernet and USB connectors (approx $500)

 

For price-tags you use specialty barcode tag printers such as a

Citizen CLP-6002, Citizen CLP-621, Datamax E4203 or the FastMark 402.

Note that barcode tag printers print ONLY tags (nothing else).

Standard laser and inkjet printers do NOT print price tags.
